The sarcasm was thicker than a Yorker putting and pantes were harder than a bad point of
all.
Along the way we managed to blow up a few cars, while both were a few, when introduced
bricks into a world of pain.
With Hobbes's brute strengthed in the might of irresistible charm and brains, it was
a real blockbuster of brawl and meets brains, then there were some hour Hobbes to some
turf.
I thought I was being invited to a quaint beach holiday, guns out I was in for a tribal
frogdown.
We had to go old school, rigging up the fence to sit summoned in the village's warriors,
because ET-ons guns were hodin' our trail.
Nothing says welcome to the family like a Polynesian smackdown.
With a bit of vehicular choreographers of physics to fight starts, we finally managed to turn
the tide.
Hobbes and our double team bricked him, Google that one too actually.
Because let's face it, teamwork makes the dream work even if it's a non-marital
operation.
We deactivated the virus and saturday, because no one's messing with my family, though
I pay the ultimate price.
I brought our Satan on Witt and Shaw.
Great, perfect.
Good job, Will.
Hope that was a passable enough Jason States.
Super passable.
That was amazing.
Like, I'm literally texting my friend like, "You need to listen to play."
Yeah, that is a...
Yeah, yeah.
I'm gonna tell everyone who's listening and not watching us that we had Jason States
on the podcast.
It was great.
Well, before we get into our opinions about this movie, I want to read many opinions
from the fans on Reddit.
Fans of Fast and Furious, typically, aren't as big of fans of Hobbes and Shaw.
Really?
There's something that get into it.
I got many one to two word answers.
So these were the one word answers I got or two words occasionally.
It ranged from terrible garbage heap, unwatchable lame, forgettable, horrible, or worthy, entertaining,
and really dick.
Worthy.
Worthy.
That's right.
Worthy.
Worthy.
Yeah.
What a compliment from a weird person.
I mean, like, you know that by that person, which is the second, they chose the word worthy,
you know.
That's not a word they aspire to a lot of things.
This person who's a muchamp 2021, he gave his feedback, which was stupid, but 100% fun
and entertaining.
And you know what?
I'm with you, muchamp.
And I like your choices in Pokemon.
Fair, fair.
I mean, if you're gonna be...
I really used the name after an all-brawn no-brains Pokemon.
I mean, that sounds like a...
Sounds like...
I'm a champ, wouldn't you?
He would be a good...
Would co-star in Hobson Show.
I'm surprised.
My Hobson.
I'm surprised he hasn't been in franchise already.
Yeah, given when they do a Pokemon, Fast and Furious Crossover, it'll happen.
So, Daryl 772,000 in 3, says, "I really liked it, but that mistress leader of the Etion
T's better result than something down the line."
Yeah.
And we kind of talked about, we had our series on that.
That is the fun part of the...
Who is that person?
We don't even know.
Well, and the thing is, we...
That's what I'm curious about, because we do know who actually did the voice.
Yeah.
We know that...
What are you gonna say?
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
I was gonna say, like, at first I didn't know who did the voice, because it didn't click.
Yeah.
It didn't click at first for me.
Well, I didn't know until I was on that...
It was on the DVD.
That it was Ryan.
I'm not gonna go look at IMDb first.
Uh-uh.
Yeah, no, absolutely not.
And then this last Fast Fan feedback said, "It's a great mindless action flick.
Now throw it on when I'm cooking sometimes.
Or you have to pay an attention, but it's great.
I just love the idea that someone who's a culinary chef is like, "You know what, my good
cooking movie is?"
Fast and Furious presents Hobbs and...
Right now why that person is doing that, true, but looking crazy man in the movie.
Hey, something about that makes you wanna whip up a good spaghetti.
Yes, or mashed potatoes.
Yeah.
Mashed potatoes.
Yeah, that's random people's opinions.
Yeah.
And we love your random opinions.
Thank you people for...
Absolutely.
Always a friendly reminder.
Uh, whatever you're listening to us on, whatever you're watching us, drop us a like, a
comment, a subscribe, a rating.
Uh, we also keep up with us on our socials, the quarter mile podcast.
We always ask, uh, a couple weeks before we do them.
In the movies, your thoughts on whatever movie we're about to review.
And then that's how we get them to share them here.
So, uh, if that's something you care about, uh, come hang out with us.
Join the conversation off the podcast.
What do you guys think?
Let's get into the Hobbs and Shaw, at all.
I like to, hey, I'm biased.
I'm gonna like anything with the rocket, and you know, I'm sorry.
You just, I know he should not be acting.
What do you honestly turned out to be a decent, who?
You know what I mean.
I'm, I'm not laughing at you.
I'm kind of going, okay, I'm following, you know, I'm following.
I like, you turn out to honestly cheat me entertained.
Is he, is he mael-streepin and dinsel in it?
No.
Oh, but he's on his own.
He's that his own thing going, he's not, he's, he's doing Johnson.
The Wayne Johnson and I am not mad at what he's doing.
So I, I, I, yeah, it's the little grimo- like, like, I really do agree with that one.
I'm going to put this movie on when I'm cooking.
Yeah.
Yes, this is a, this is my cooking movie.
Thank you.
Who was that?
That was kind of like acoustic.
Thank you, kind of like acoustic work.
Kind of like acoustic.
What is it?
What did you say?
Kind of like acoustic.
Yeah, like acoustic guitar.
Kind of like acoustic.
Hey, I'm with you.
This, this is my, when I'm making some meat my, my, my, my, or derv's.
This is what I'm putting on because I know they're going to come out right because I got
my movie on in the background and I know somebody might be cussing.
I know Jason is going to give me one of them hard lines and I'm going to try to repeat
it to somebody.
You know, I know the rock is going to have them arms out.
That's a good Saturday after this.
I really like this one.
Honestly, if it weren't for Series 7, the way that they handled the whole Paul Walker thing,
if it weren't for that, like, reviewed at the end, this might end up being my favorite
one.
Like I said, I've always found the side characters to be the more engaging ones in this franchise.
And so giving them a spin off, I thought was a lot of fun.
And the director David Leach, who he was the uncredited co-director of the first John
Wick, did Paul, he directed Deadpool 2 and he also directed Atomic Blonde.
And last year he directed the Fall Guy, which was really good.
Yeah, they sure did.
Yes, they did.
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
But he's a former stuntman and so he knows how to do action really well.
And he's done one of those, you know, stuntmen would be end up being really good action directors.
Yeah.
And such a punk, I would be a stunt.
Yeah, I would never, and I'm okay.
I would, if I was an actor, I would justify always having a stunt person.
I mean, the real reason is because I don't want to do the stunt, but I would be like,
I'm hoping for age.
You know, Cynthia Devon's her own stunt.
And that's one of the things that Cynthia did her own stunt in Wicked.
Oh, really?
That's cool.
Well, that's one of the end of it.
Danny Trejo has said is, especially she's gotten older, he's like, he's not afraid to
use a stunt double.
I think he said something like, I'm not going to go somewhere to job just to say I got
big nuts, like, something like that.
I wonder though if you get paid more if you also do your stunts?
I don't know.
That's a good question.
We should ask Jackie Chan.
Yeah, it's probably a different.
I think we'll have them on the podcast.
Right.
I don't know, but I gumwilled Danny Trejo needs a stunt double because he would be protected
at all costs.
Protect.
Protect much of it.
That's the thing.
He's the softest kind of man in the world.
I just, I really like this one.
I find this one really fun.
I like the fact that there's a moment in it, one of the scenes in some awe where fatty is
like in, I guess it's like, Bob's like childhood bedroom or whatever, but you've got posters
on the wall and the movie posters on the wall.
One of them is or 48 hours.
Yeah, one of the greatest buddy-cott movies.
One of them is for the movie Cobra, the lone classic.
Yeah.
And to me, that is the biggest indicator of the tone this movie is setting.
Cobra is quintessential, big, ridiculous, and just a hell of a time.
Yeah, absolutely.
It's one is it's like with commando or.
Yeah, like this is a real like action hero movie.
It is.
I think so.
And it's the kind of movie that like stay-thumb excels.
This is his niche.
Yeah.
He gets, you know, again, when he does stuff like crank or the expendables or the mechanic or
the transporter, it's just let him do his thing and put him in a chaotic situation and let
him go.
I think he's one of the fun.
He's also funny, but he's really funny.
Yeah, really funny, dude.
And what I mean is.
It's timing of his line.
That's what that's what.
And that's why I like him and rock together.
That's why him and Shops go, they go well.
Yeah.
They have such good chemistry.
I love that first scene where they were just roasting each other.
It was that was nice.
Yeah, it's a big stupid vice.
It makes my balls.
I want to be a drag.
I want to be a drag.
I want to cross the road.
That road is matured.
That's true.
That's just.
All right.
Well, I'm going to be the Debbie Downer.
I'm going to be the guy.
There's always got to be one.
I do like it.
It's a fun action movie.
But when I marathon, the fast and furious movies before a new movie comes out, I don't
put this one on.
There are a few things that seem weird to me about it.
I will say that I will have fun watching it.
I watched it today and I enjoyed it.
I've always felt like this about the Hobbes character in the fast and furious movies and
that the more we have of them, the less I like him.
I thought he was in five.
He was an antagonist.
Yeah.
And I liked that role.
Yeah.
They put him a ton into six.
And I remember when we reviewed that movie, both me and Bailey were like, every time he
opens his mouth, it makes me want to just want to win the face.
He had seven though.
He got injured at the beginning of it and he came up to get he had two like big action hero
moments and like, Lexi and the bus at the cat.
Breaking breaking a drone with a ambulance.
I mean, like this is P croque, you know, like I like that stuff.
I just feel like with when you put it in the continuity of the fast and furious universe,
you know, this movie is happening after the events of fast eight.
And fast eight is when Jason Salem's character, Decoratrice, when he hopes out and joins the
team for a common goal.
And in that movie, there is a lot of confrontation between Hobbes and Shaw, but through that movie,
Warns that like, you know, Shaw was set up.
He's not as big as everyone as you've been led to believe.
And at the end, they do have like a kind of connection away.
They respect similar to how Toretto and Hobbes do in the movie.
And then right from the beginning of Hobbes and Shaw, it's like they undid all that.
I'm not working with this guy.
I couldn't do it.
I didn't even know they had it each other.
Yeah, even though they referenced the fact that they already worked together.
But so like at the end of eight, it was like kind of like a, like a, literally a family barbecue
moment where they're like, you know, we're cool.
And then like, so that kind of, that kind of took me off guard a little bit.
My big, my biggest question, maybe, maybe I missed it.
That's why I was one of the lives of three of us.
Aside from at the very end, when he says, you made me kill my brother, do they ever reference
Owen Shaw, Faker Shaw's brother?
Because the whole movie, when they're, you know, working to save the sister when we see
him, I'm a shot in prison, the whole time, I'm like, where's Owen Shaw?
He was like the big bad and fast six.
He was part of fast eight.
And then the whole time, I'm like, what's he up to?
And then at the end, that's something like, you made me kill my brother, the Brixton.
Yeah.
Yeah, there's another hole.
What?
That's fair.
You think of it?
Yeah.
And then this is the biggest issue, and maybe we'll, we'll, we'll, a little more when I
read some of the questions, I have to go back and watch again.
Yeah, well, you watch Red Line three times.
I did.
You're right.
So this movie is really long.
I think they could have cut 30 minutes.
It's a little long.
It's a little long.
Yeah.
It's a little long, two, two, twenty.
Yeah, yeah.
Is it two, two, 15, two, twenty?
Yeah, it's close.
The entire movie felt like a rock ego trip to me.
You know what?
And I was, that's one thing I was going to get into.
It just feels weird because it was like, it is part of the family.
But it feels like the weird cousin here, like I guess I have to hang out with him.
Well, that's, that's part of why, that's part of why when I was talking about how much
I love it.
Why I was only talking about stator.
Yeah, yeah, because I was going to get into one of my criticisms is, and again, doing
Johnson, he's good in it, because he's doing kind of his, his one thing he knows how to
do.
And it's, and it lets him, yeah, it lets him stay in his lane and kind of, you know, smirk
and quip and flex.
I'm sure he's a pleasant person to be around.
He definitely thinks highly of himself.
Yeah.
And I mean, that's kind of what you can see from his movies, how that's grown over.
And I mean, I feel like, well, I mean, I think the, the crown jewel of it all was black
at him.
Absolutely.
It was just of the sort of, I'm bigger.
I should only be fighting Superman.
Yeah.
And then now, the last critique I'll have of his, and this is something I'm always said about
Hobbs character.
Yeah.
When they brought his character in on five, I was totally digging the character.
Yeah.
So, the whole attitude of being a law man and being, I'm going to, I don't even, like, I
want point in fast five, he says, I don't care who they are.
What they, who they are is a name on my table.
And I'm going to bring him in that, that was his little attitude in five.
And then you see a shift in six, where somehow he becomes okay working with the criminals.
And he was the cliffhanger in five was, I'm going to, I'm going to find you.
I'll see you soon, Toronto.
That's like his main tag line.
And like, then he's, then he's like, okay, working with him and then you see him.
And I guess the, the fast and furious mythology of like, well, the connection of family and
Vin Diesel changed his mind and his heart, which is kind of hokey to me, but it's a hokey
series.
Yeah, but in this movie, the fact that he's like getting to know how he so well before,
like before they're working together when he's bringing her in, like, last five Hobbs
would have not cared one bit actually.
I was going to say my brother in.
Yeah, to me, one of the biggest things that brings it down is the forced romance.
Oh gosh, yes, their chemistry was even makes a joke.
We don't have any chemistry.
I'm like, that's not a joke.
Yes, it's like, that's, yeah, yeah, we know.
And I love Vanessa Kirby.
She's really good in, in the movie, I think.
And one thing that I noted was there was a very easy, not fan service, but I guess sort
of cheap titillation that they avoid it, which is they manage to show her in the rain.
And they don't have her nipples poke out.
Yeah.
And that's one of those things that movies do all the time when you've got an attractive
woman and it's raining.
We got to be there.
Like, and it just, she's hot.
Remember she watches movie.
Hey, remember those, remember those?
But the fact that they do that.
We got a movie.
Right.
Yeah, there we go.
They didn't give it the red line treatment, right?
You know, you know, I'm not going to go back to that movie.
Yeah.
I watched a bunch of the bonus features as well.
They talked about how it was very important for everyone involved to make her on their
level and to make that character formidable.
She was okay.
So okay.
Wow, me.
She didn't.
I mean, yeah, I wasn't loud or anything.
I just feel like she certainly wasn't damsel in distress.
No, and I liked that she wasn't.
Yeah, that she was the one who actually saved their ass as a couple of times.
Yeah.
At the end, it kind of felt like it was a communal effort.
Yeah, absolutely.
What, I mean, that was, you know, that was the whole point of the movie that was, yeah,
which, what, I keep saying I'm done with critiques.
I have one more drink, but I'll start it off.
I'll start off with the compliment.
My favorite part of the movie, and I said this was a dress and the character of Brixton,
I thought he made for a fantastic over-the-top Fast and Furious villain.
I would even put him higher than a lot of the other Fast and Furious villains who
I was to rank them.
I love him.
And like, he was a fun character.
I mean, ridiculous, absolutely, but like, you know, this is, this is that kind of movie.
It's an action hero movie.
We don't need supermod.
Yeah, that being said, what did Nine-Flaw for his weakness to be like, if they hit me at
the same time, my computers can't process it?
Yeah, that's fair.
You seem like someone who's smart enough to make that kind of technology.
That's fair.
That's fair.
I mean, but it was over, it was helping you understand the overall theme of the movie about
them, weren't learning the world.
It was literally the only way to defeat him was they both have to work in tandem.
And so it was that kind of had one had to get hurt while the other one.
Right.
It was almost like a saw trap.
Like it was the head to learn the lesson.
Yeah.
And that was everything was getting to that whole of the other phrase that it's just, there
were so many things where the rock was trying to be vindiesel in this movie.
Yeah.
Where he's like, he's like, you don't need technology.
We got hurt.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm not going to get it.
It might have been during better luck tomorrow, which that is the whole fever dream.
But I think that might have been it because we were referencing Justin Lin and the characters
that are in like Tokyo, the trip, but they were also in better luck tomorrow.
But they're also in like different fast and fierce movies.
This is a bit of a narrative, but it fits in with our rock versus Vin Diesel, which if you guys want to hear more about that again, our eighth episode is we wouldn't really read all the people's opinions about it.
Oh, and then we referenced it on our fifth episode is two.
The idea of fast, the fast and fierce spin off featuring Rob's and Shaw first emerged during the filming of the plate of the period, right 2017 after.
Okay.
Yeah, I knew about that.
Yep.
For producers and pseudo execs took a note of the comedic chemistry between the two throughout their scenes together.
Plants to actually develop the spin off were informally green lit were the end of the filming.
They were later revealed to be the reason behind the much discussed animosity between Vin Diesel and the rock in the final weeks of production, which resulted in
Diesel reporting like cancel some cancels and some of Johnson scenes and not showing up for filomena at all for at least one day of production, leaving hundreds of casts and through sitting idly by.
After news of the spin off became public.
Close stars Michelle Rodriguez and Tyree Skips and publicly criticized it for damaging the fast and furious family super family related of them as they were pushing back the release of the
ninth movie at least by a year.
Johnson would subsequently quit the main franchise, opt in not to return for the ninth.
This is an old fact because it says ninth, 10th and the 11th movie, but he eventually did just close credits for 10.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And probably because he got paid a ton of money for.
I was I was my first thought when I saw the movie was like, oh, I guess they paid enough money.
Also Dwayne did return.
Well, we are talking about the scene.
And we're going to say that he has plans to make a second final standalone Hobbs movie in which the audience would get to see his character walk off into the sunset.
So we might get a second, but I've heard some we've heard some interesting things as to whether it might be Hobbs and Shaw too.
And also might be Hobbs and Dante where brings back Jason and most character.
It could just be like Hobbs period.
Yeah.
Um, I was probably leaning more towards Hobbs.
Yeah, which I would be less inclined to.
Yeah, but you know, it's and this fact doesn't value the most do she think that vending in my opinion.
Oh, yeah, which is so you know at the end of these movies that is have like a post credits scene.
Right.
And then so at the end of class eight, they're what they had already made it to like post production.
They had they showed it for the to Vin Diesel and the other people for like final review, but like this is that we're done.
We're pretty good. It's all wrapped up in a bow or whatever. And the last scene, he's Hobbs and Shaw and Vin Diesel rejected it, which made them have to go back and take that scene out of the edit, which means they have to like tons of people had to do so much more work.
They had to spend so much more money on just taking out.
That's right.
Just because he's like, this isn't it's not going to one of his movies.
Yeah.
And that's tough.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's that's that's come on, man.
So before we get before we get to the best bits, which we are currently at seven seven four drew in charge, and you're drilling the lead.
Love that.
Now you you're going to have to re explain the best bits.
Yeah, I will absolutely explain it.
But before you do that, what I want to know is our movie rating.
Yeah.
Yeah.
My favorite part is this are too fast, too furious movie rating.
Um, too fast as you loved it.
Fast as you liked it.
You know, you didn't like it or you didn't really care that much.
And then like if you didn't like it to the point where you're like, my life is less good because of the movie, if you really, you know, I did it.
Yeah.
That's a two furious.
So who wants to go first?
Let's find our casco first.
I give it a, I give it a high fast.
Okay.
Cool.
You know, again, like I said, as a critical lens, I can't in good conscience, give it a two fast because it does have structural issues.
And again, like you said, the romance will spores just stuff like that.
But I also just, I think it's so much fun watching it.
And I, and I cannot fault it for succeeding in being the kind of movie it's trying to be.
Even if there are certain things that don't work within it.
I'll give it a, a, a furious, I didn't hate it.
I don't even mind it.
So I haven't regulated. We watch, re-watch this one unless the one's like, I want to. And then I've been like, okay.
So it's a furious.
What, what about you, CJ?
I'm just going to give it a straight fast.
All right.
I liked it. It's cool.
I'm going to watch it again.
Okay. Like I said, I'm, I just want to have something laying in the background and that's when I like, yeah, I remember that part.
It's a good cooking move.
It is apparently.
Yeah.
So we're at Drew's best bits.
All right.
So I'm going to give it a, I'm going to give it a, I'm going to give it a straight fast, straight fast.
And then I'm going to give it a straight fast.
That's what's called Drew's best bits.
But, and I'll tell you what the qualifying factor is.
Each, each time we do this, we have, it could be like this, these were the three most annoying scenes in the movies.
Or maybe it's like, this was the three funniest scenes to me.
Yeah.
Three, you know, so we always have a category.
And I'll give you three.
And you both are going to try to pick what I'm picking as like my best.
What did you say?
So we're trying to pick what your favorite of those three are.
Absolutely.
Yes.
And I'll tell you the qualifying session.
Now, if you pick correctly,
CJ is going to get a point.
Okay.
If you pick incorrectly, I get a point.
Okay.
And we're currently at 7-4.
None to kill him.
I'm undefeated at the quarter mile podcast best bits.
If we're talking two seasons, I'm kind of the undefeated chap.
It's basically the most important thing in my life.
Here are my scenes though.
Here's today, those times that I really enjoyed this movie was when they kind of went back to the basics and got to the action scenes.
And how it somehow, and then whenever it got back into a car chase scene of some sort,
I was like, oh, this feels like a fast and furious movie.
These are my favorite, furious fights.
Okay.
What the scene?
So the first ones, I liked it was an opening scene where on one hand,
you had the rock fighting haddy and their introduction.
And then it was also switching it to the scenes where it was show fighting a bunch of people.
Yeah.
Well, that was when he first was meeting Brixton.
And it was just really cool.
They sliced this again.
So that's scene number one.
Scene number two is the interrogation scene, which starts with them interrogating.
With them, they play the, what was it?
Mick Jagger play.
Yeah.
And then it ends with them in a really cool chase scene.
That, that, awesome.
There's a flame.
Oh, they would have got the, looked up to the electric shot.
Yep, absolutely.
So, and then scene three, it, I mean, it almost was like the third actor in the movie, but like the Simola fight.
I say scene two.
And, and I'm trying to guess what you pick is your favorite?
Yes, yes, that's the thing.
I say it's scene two.
I think I'm also going to go with scene two.
I think that, that's, that's going to be my, here's the thing.
Yeah.
I wanted it to be seen too.
You know it's seen too.
But by the end of the Simola scene, I was like, I, I have to give it to the one that won you over.
I had to.
So I, I literally was right.
I had other options.
Yeah.
The entire time I was going to the movie, I was like, I mean, this interrogation is best.
And like, I even remember at the beginning of the movie being like, I can't remember.
I feel like there's a scene at the end that goes on too long.
It did go, but like it was, it was like that bank high scene in fast five, like a Italian job.
The whole property high is like, what are really, well, I, I had, I had to be like,
this is a great action director.
